About Bumbira Art & Culture Program
At Bumbira Art & Culture Program we recognise that art changes lives, builds resilience and strengthen communities. Bumbira Art & Culture Programs work with the local Gomeroi community to improve social and emotional wellbeing within women from age 15 and above; through art, culture, connection to country, connection to community and cultural identity. We bring artists, Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal community together to share stories, learn from each other, aspire and inspire whilst making art.
We aim to:
- Embed art making practices in the local Aboriginal Community
- Engage First Nations Artists and mentors to deliver a variety of creative workshops to community members
- Enhance social and emotional wellbeing by providing a safe and culturally appropriate environment to gain a better understanding of artistic and cultural practices, health and education whilst connecting with each other, their culture and their local Aboriginal Community.
By attending the Bumbira Art & Culture Program participants gain improved social and emotional wellness in a nurturing, positive and safe environment. With the encouragement and support of staff participants develop a unique artist biography learning and speaking about themselves, their families, their history and their culture building positive and respectful relationships with themselves and community.
Participants gain cultural knowledge and skills
in traditional and contemporary art making and cultural practices. Under the guidance of staff and mentors at the centre participants apply techniques they learn into practice, creating their own pieces which they can keep for themselves, gift to friends and family or exhibit and sell at the Bumbira Aboriginal Art Gallery. Participants reflect on their artworks, their experience and their journey during the program creating a story for each of their artist pieces.
